Dripping Taps
Some people think dripping taps are nothing more than an annoyance. But if you think about, the water waste can push up your water bill. A single dripping tap alone can waste hundreds of gallons over an entire year.
In most cases, this is caused by an internal washer that has become worn, torn or dislodged over time. If you’re not familiar with your tap hardware and how it works, better to call a plumber.
Pooling Drains
Anything that goes down the drain or toilet can cause a blockage – food remnants, congealed oil, soap suds, knotted hair, toilet paper, etc.
It’s important to deal with the clogged sink or toilet at the first sign of it. Keeping it off for a long time will only make the problem worse until eventually the drain becomes completely blocked.
You can try home remedies such as using a plunger, a sewer/plumber’s snake, or a chemical clog remover. A word of caution: improper use of chemicals can cause deterioration of your drainage pipes. If those remedies don’t work, contact your local plumber immediately.
Running Toilet
This problem is extremely costly, as a running toilet waste up to 200 gallons of water a day.
If the issue is due to a faulty flapper valve, which controls the water that passes from the tank to the bowl, you can fix it with a toilet repair kit.
If that’s not the case, the toilet run may be caused by silent leaks or sediment blocking the flushing and filling mechanism.
Faulty Water Heater
Is the water heater not heating up? Many things can be at fault here but the most common is a broken thermostat, sediment build-up in the tank or extinguished pilot light.
Without a question, you will want a professional to inspect and fix your water heater.
Sewer System Backup
If multiple drains and toilets are not draining and they reek of human waste, you have a sewer system problem. It could be due to clogging in the main sewer, tree roots invading the pipes or old sewer lines that have broken or collapsed.
If the problem’s on the public road, your water company must fix it. But if it’s on your property, the repairs are your sole responsibility.
Sewer system backup is expensive to fix so you may want to call your water company first to help you locate the blockage. They’ll usually do it free of charge. Otherwise, call a professional right away.
Plumbing is a messy business. And if your home is considerably old, you might discover one plumbing fault after another once you start looking into your plumbing system.
