1. Consider Home Window Tinting
Getting your home windows tinted is one of the best ways to lower the temperature in your home. With home window tinting, a protective layer of film is added to the inside of your windows.
Window tinting is also popular for larger buildings and offices, and this is known as commercial window tinting.
Because the window film helps to block out light from the sun, the interior of your home will be a lot cooler. However, this isn’t the only benefit that home window tinting offers. Here are some other benefits:
- Blocks out harmful UV rays
- Offers more privacy, as your neighbors can’t peak in through the window film
- Protects your home from theft, as burglars will be deterred when they can’t see the contents of your home
- Prolong the lifespan of your furniture (the sun can cause your furniture to deteriorate quicker)
As you can see, the window film is definitely worth it. We recommend working with a professional to install your window film to make sure it’s done the right way.
2. Clean Your Cooling System
Cleaning your cooling system is another way to make sure your home stays cool during the hot summer months. Cleaning it will ensure that air is able to flow out of it easily and without any obstruction.
If the air inside your cooling system is obstructed by Dust or debris, it’ll make it twice as hard to cool your home. This will result in sky-high energy bills.
In addition to cleaning out your cooling system, you should also have it serviced once per year, even if it’s in perfect condition. An HVAC technician will be able to spot problems with your cooling system that you can’t. And, having it serviced once per year will help increase its lifespan.
If you live in Austin, TX, and face issues with your AC then you should get in touch with an Austin AC repair contractor to have a properly functioning air conditioning system that will make you and your family comfortable in your home and your customers comfortable visiting your business.
3. Invest in Fans
When it comes to keeping your home cool, the humble fan can make a big difference.
Of course, running a fan means using electricity, but it’ll still come out cheaper than cranking your AC unit. We suggest buying floor fans for each room of your home, but only running them (and keeping them plugged in) when you’re in that room.
You can learn more about fans that really blow cold air at Quality Home Air Care. Such tower fans are good since they move massive amounts of air in a single direction.
It’s also a good idea to invest in ceiling fans for the rooms of your home where you spend the most time, such as the living room and master bedroom. In addition to helping circulate cool air, ceiling fans also offer a nice amount of ambient light.
4. Keep Your Blinds Closed
Keeping your blinds closed is another very simple thing you can do to keep your home cool.
In fact, one study found that keeping your blinds closed will deflect as much as 30 percent of heat. This can lead to 7 percent savings on your energy bills.
You can even take things one step further by investing in blackout curtains. Blackout curtains block out sunlight and naturally insulate rooms where they’re installed. We recommend purchasing curtains that are a neutral color with white backings, as these tend to do the best job at blocking out sunlight.
5. Swap Out Your Sheets
Before the hot weather hits, we recommend swapping out your sheets.
Not only is this a great way to freshen up your bedroom, but it’s also a great way to stay cool. While fleece blankets and flannels are great for insulation and staying warm, these materials will overheat you during the summer months.
For the summer months, we recommend switching to cooler materials, like cotton. You can take it a step further by buying buckwheat pillows. Buckwheat hulls come with air space between each hull, and they won’t hold onto your body heat like regular pillows.
6. Let the Night Air In
During the summer months, the temperature tends to drop significantly by nightfall, sometimes as much as 20 or 30 degrees.
Take advantage of this temperature drop by turning off your AC and opening your windows when you sleep. You can even make a wind tunnel with the cool air by strategically placing your fans to force the cool breeze toward you.
Just make sure you close your windows and blinds in the morning before things get too hot.
7. Keep Your Body Cool
In addition to keeping your home cool, don’t forget to do things to cool off your body. There are a ton of simple things you can do, including:
- Drinking ice-cold drinks
- Staying hydrated
- Wearing cool clothing
- Placing cold washcloths against your neck and forehead
- Avoiding warm foods
- Keeping a bowl of cold water next to your bed and dipping your toes in it if you feel hot during the middle of the night
As you can see, there’s a lot that you can do to cool yourself off in addition to cooling your surroundings.
