Purchases of pet cleaning products skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
But, when you’re trying to remove pet stains or odors, you want to ensure you buy products that actually work. Let’s bust the top myths about pet stain removal.
1. Pet Odor Never Goes Away
Many people believe that once pet odor has gotten into your carpet, you’ll never get it out. But, there are lots of ways you can reduce the severity of the smell or remove it entirely.
Obviously, you can use scents to mask the smell. But, using a dedicated cleaner will help work the smell out more quickly and reduce the number of chemicals floating around your home in the long run.
2. Baking Soda and Vinegar is a Cure-All
While baking soda and vinegar is a decent household cleaner for pet stains, it’s not magic. And, it will only remove the odor from pet urine for a short time – sooner than later, you’ll start smelling it again.
Baking soda isn’t nearly as good a cleaner as some sources say. It’s especially dangerous for carpets since it can damage the fibers when you’re trying to get out pet stains on the carpet. It can also bond to upholstery, making it a poor choice.
Vinegar isn’t a great choice when it comes to carpets, either. It’s too acidic to be used on colored fabrics. To remove the smell permanently, you’ll need to use an enzyme cleaner. These are the best option for removing biological waste like urine. You can purchase one, or you can buy an enzyme cleaner at a pet store near you.

3. Professionals Can’t Help
People often distrust professional cleaning services. They believe that professional cleaners will shrink or damage their carpet. But that’s not true, particularly if you’re working with a well-reviewed company.
Professional cleaners know what products to use with each type of stain, so they won’t unwittingly cause a problem. They can also work with you if you have preferences or chemicals you prefer to avoid.
Make sure you look at rug cleaning services in your area if you’re struggling to get different pet stains out of your carpet.
4. Stains Are a Lost Cause
You may believe that there’s just nothing you can do to improve the look of your pet’s stains on the carpet. You might feel like giving up and throwing the whole thing out.
But, even if you can’t get rid of the stains entirely, there are many ways you can improve the appearance of things after they’ve been stained by your pets. You might just need to put in a little extra elbow grease.
